Chinese New Year is here – Here’s what awaits in Perth


The month of February isn’t just a special month for the romantics out there. It’s also the most awaited time for the Chinese and non-Chinese community to greet the Lunar New Year.

With tons of events and Chinese festivities all around Perth, we’ve put together top celebrations where you can gloriously feast, watch Lion Dances, and enjoy the most of the Chinese Culture this Year of the Ox.

Food and Feasts

Food is a huge part of Chinese tradition and any celebration of Chinese New Year will never be complete without a feast packed with authentic Chinese cuisines. 

To get a taste of China right in the heart of Perth, James Street Bar has a Buffet Feast set on February 13, Saturday. The bar will be featuring Asian Hot dishes over lunch until 3 in the afternoon. Expect puddings, Hokkien noodles, Sashimis, Dim Sums, Roast Duck, Nian Gao, and so much more. There will also be a free-flowing Chinese Tea included in the buffet feasts menu!

Over at Quay Perth HQ Bar and Kitchen, there will be a five-course degustation dinner from  February 12 to February 13, 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM. The menu will include Eggplant ravioli, smoked salmon, Shark bay scallop confit, pan-fried duck breast, green tea, and mango floats. Each course will be paired with amazing wines such as Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc – Semillon, Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Classic Rutherglen Muscat. 

Banquet or Buffet Feasts to celebrate the Lunar New Year? 

Head to Crown Perth where you can choose from Silks’ flavourful Banquet or an abundant Buffet Feast at the Atrium. 

Indulge in mouth-watering Double Boiled Whelk with Cordycep Flower and Fish Maw, Wok Based Lobster with Ginger and Scallion, and ‘Abundance & Prosperity Poon Choi’ in a heavenly rich broth of Stewed Abalone, Prawn, Squid, and Fish Balls. 

Street Carnival and Lion Dance

Head to the streets and become a spectator of perhaps the most colorful new year celebration. All over the streets of the city, there will be tons of Lion Dance performances and lighting of firecrackers to watch out for. Starting at Perth Cultural Centre with the Perth Chinese New Year Fair 2021 spearheaded by the Chung Wah Association

The Dragon Dance Troupe will be parading from James Street down the cultural center to showcase Chinese culture and customs. The event will be on February 14 and will start at 12:00 noon and wrap up around 9:00 pm. The Kung Fu School will also be joining the lion dance and the Martial arts exhibition.

There will also be a traditional Lion Dance performance on the same day, 1:00 PM at the Kardinya Park Shopping Centre. On Saturday, head to Waterford Plaza at 6:30 pm to catch a special Lion Dance Demonstration from the internationally recognized Yaolin Kung Fu Association. Yangs Dumplings will also be giving out FREE dumplings in the spirit of gift-giving.
