This weekend, Northbridge’s underground institution, Nevermind Smallclub, will be throwing its last few parties – before officially closing doors for the final time.
Hidden down a dark walkway, Nevermind Smallclub has been cultivating good times for the past 4 years. Emerging from humble beginnings as an extension of MVMNT Sundays at Flyrite, owners Kai Ono and Aeson McKay have worked tirelessly with Venue Manager Kye Brindley and their team to build the bar/club crossover and were in 2020 awarded for their efforts winning ‘Best Late Night Venue’ in WA at the annual Australian Hotels Association Awards.
Pushing a steady diet of all things house, disco and even a little techno, the venue has boasted individuality and a commitment to building Perth’s dance music community, whilst engaging Perth with the rest of Australia and global dance music culture. Since inception the venue has played host to countless national and international artists including CamelPhat, Sam Divine, Riva Starr, Black Loops, DJ Boring & legendary NY disco king Danny Krivit and will also be remembered for housing many promoter run events including Solouk, Huntley Social (for men who like men) and Snatch for girls.
MVMNT Sundays, of which the venue spawned from has also carried on (for some 6 years now) and is widely accepted as Perth’s premier inner city Sunday destination, attracting an abundance of international punters, hospitality crew and anyone looking for a quality way to finish the weekend.
Shutting its dark doors much sooner than expected (due to redevelopment plans) the venue joins a list of hospitality hotspots to have fallen prey to commercial interests in recent years and will leave a significant hole in the local scene.
While this news means a blow for Perth’s nightlife, we hear Kai, Aeson & their team have a few dance moves left in them.
